What you get for the price

UK photo services sell different things under the same name, so compare what is included:

  • Post Office Digital Check & Send: the fee covers more than a photo. Branch staff take your digital photo, check your online application and send your documents to HM Passport Office. You still pay the passport fee on top.
  • Photo booths: a set of printed photos, and on many booths a digital photo code for the online application.
  • Snappy Snaps shops: passport photos taken in the shop at each shop’s own price, or ID photo prints made from a photo you upload.
  • Photo prints (Boots Photo and others): just the print. With our free print sheet, one 6 x 4 inch print holds six 35 x 45 mm UK passport photos.

Which option to choose

  • Online application: you need one digital photo. A photo code saves typing, but a photo taken on your own phone is accepted too, and it costs nothing. Online applications are also cheaper than paper ones.
  • You want someone to check everything: the Post Office service checks your whole application and takes the photo, which is worth it if you are unsure about the form.
  • Paper form: you need two identical printed photos, 45 mm high by 35 mm wide. A booth gives you prints on the spot; our print sheet gives you six for the price of one standard print.
  • Babies: a baby’s photo is often easier at home, lying on a plain white sheet; see our baby passport photo page for the UK rules.

Or make it free

  1. Take the photo at home against a plain cream, light gray or off-white wall, facing a window, with someone holding the phone at eye level. Our guide to taking a passport photo at home has the details.
  2. Open the free UK passport photo tool. It checks the photo against HM Passport Office rules and gives you the uncropped file the online service asks for. Your photo never leaves your device.
  3. Applying online: use that file in the application. You are done, for free.
  4. Paper form: download the print sheet with the 10 x 15 cm size. It places six 35 x 45 mm photos on one sheet at true size, with cut guides.
  5. Order one standard 6 x 4 inch print of the sheet on matte photo paper (HM Passport Office does not accept glossy or textured paper), printed at 100% with no cropping, then cut out two identical photos.

A single print costs pence, not pounds, as the table below shows. The print sheet maker explains how to keep the size exact.

Frequently asked questions

Does Boots do passport photos?

Boots' photo websites, boots.com/photo and Boots Photo, list photo prints but no passport photo service or price, so ask your local store before you go. What Boots Photo does sell is standard 6 x 4 inch prints, from £0.10, with a matte paper option, which is all you need to print our free sheet of six UK passport photos.

How much are passport photos at Snappy Snaps?

Snappy Snaps says passport photo prices vary between its shops and asks you to contact your nearest shop. Its shops also print ID photos from a picture you upload; the Canary Wharf shop, for example, charges £14.00 for a set of six ID photos on one 6 x 4 inch print. Check the price on your own shop's page.

How much does the Post Office charge for passport photos?

The Post Office's Digital Check & Send service costs £16.00 on top of the HM Passport Office fee. It includes taking your digital photo in the branch, checking your application and sending it for you. It is offered at about 1,100 branches. You pay the passport fee separately, £102.00 for an adult standard passport applied for online.

How much is a Photo-Me passport photo booth?

Photo-Me's website describes its booths, which produce a set of four British passport photos approved by HM Passport Office, but it does not list a price. The booth shows the price before you pay. If you apply online, check that the booth offers a digital photo code before you start.

What is the cheapest way to get a UK passport photo?

Apply online with a photo taken on your own phone. HM Passport Office accepts photos taken with your own device, so the photo costs nothing. Our free UK passport photo tool checks it against the rules first. For a paper form, print our sheet of six photos as one 6 x 4 inch print, which costs far less than a booth or a shop.

Do I need a photo code to apply online?

No. A code from a booth or shop is one way to add your photo to the online application. The other is to take the photo with your own device during the application or upload one taken at home. Both go through the same automatic photo check, so a good home photo works just as well.
