What you get for the price

  • Australia Post: six 35 x 45 mm photos, or three larger photos, printed in color on gloss paper. You need two identical photos for an application, and embassies suggest bringing a spare or two.
  • Photo labs (Officeworks, Big W and others): the price of a plain photo print. With our free print sheet, one 6 x 4 inch print holds six 35 x 45 mm passport photos.
  • Photo codes: the online renewal takes your photo through a code from a participating photo provider. Ask the store whether it can give you one if you plan to renew online.

Which option to choose

  • Online renewal: you need a photo code, so go to a participating provider.
  • Paper application: printed photos work, whether a store takes them or you make them and print them at a lab.
  • Glasses: Australian passport photos are taken without glasses, unless you have a medical certificate. That applies wherever the photo is taken.
  • Babies: a baby can lie on a plain white sheet and be photographed from above; children under three may have their mouth open. See our baby passport photo page.

Or make it free

  1. Take the photo at home against a plain white or light gray wall, facing a window, without glasses, with someone holding the phone at eye level. Our guide to taking a passport photo at home has the details.
  2. Open the free Australian passport photo tool. It checks the photo against the Passport Office rules and crops it to 35 x 45 mm without editing the background. Your photo never leaves your device.
  3. Download the print sheet with the 10 x 15 cm size. It places six 35 x 45 mm photos on one sheet at true size, with cut guides.
  4. Order one standard glossy 6 x 4 inch print of the sheet at a photo lab or kiosk, printed at 100% with no cropping or border. Do not print it on a home inkjet printer.
  5. Cut out two identical photos and keep the spares.

One print costs cents, not dollars, as the table below shows. The print sheet maker explains how to keep the size exact.

Frequently asked questions

How much are passport photos at Australia Post?

Australia Post lists $23.50 for printed color photos on gloss paper, either six photos at 35 x 45 mm or three larger photos, at participating Post Offices with no appointment. That covers the photos only; the passport fee and any lodgement costs are separate.

How much are passport photos at Officeworks?

We could not find an Officeworks passport photo price on its website, so ask your local store. Officeworks does publish its standard photo print price, from $0.15, and sells 6 x 4 inch prints, so you can print our free sheet of six 35 x 45 mm passport photos there.

Does Kmart do passport photos?

We could not open a Kmart passport photo page to confirm the service or a price, so check with your local store before you go. If you make your own photo, any photo lab that prints standard 6 x 4 inch photos on heavy glossy photo paper can print our sheet.

Can I print Australian passport photos at home?

Not on an ordinary home inkjet printer. The Passport Office asks for high-quality, heavy-weight glossy prints made by a photographic process, a dye-sublimation printer or a professional inkjet printer. Take our print sheet to a photo lab or kiosk and order one standard glossy print instead.

Can I use a photo booth for an Australian passport?

The Australian High Commission in London advises against photo booths for Australian passports. Australian photos also have a larger head size (32 to 36 mm) than UK booth photos, so a photo made for another country's passport usually does not fit the Australian rules.

Can I use a home photo to renew online?

The online renewal collects your photo through a photo code from a participating photo provider, so a file you made yourself cannot be uploaded there. For a paper application, printed photos you made with our tool and printed at a lab are fine if they meet the rules.
