Indian e-Visa photo requirements

The Indian e-Visa is applied for online at the Government of India’s Indian Visa Online site, and the photo is uploaded with the application. The requirements for the digital photograph are:

  • JPEG format, between 10 KB and 1 MB;
  • square: the height and the width of the photo must be equal;
  • full face, front view, eyes open, without spectacles;
  • your head centered in the frame, showing the full head from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin;
  • a plain light-colored or white background, with no shadows on your face or on the background;
  • no border around the photo.

The e-Visa site sets no pixel size, head size or expression rule. A neutral face with the mouth closed is still the safest choice, because it is how the photo on your passport looks.

How to take an Indian e-Visa photo at home

  1. Stand in front of a plain, light wall, with soft, even light on your face.
  2. Take off your glasses and move your hair away from your face.
  3. Ask someone to take the photo from about 1.5 meters, at your eye level, with space above your head and your shoulders in the picture.
  4. Look straight at the camera with your eyes open.
  5. Upload the photo above. The tool crops it to a 600 x 600 square, centers and sizes your head, can make the background plain white, and checks the photo.
  6. Download the JPEG and upload it in the e-Visa application with your passport page scan.

What the tool checks for an Indian e-Visa

The tool makes a square photo with your full head centered and sized to 50–69% of the height, the same framing as a US visa photo. It checks that you face the camera with your eyes open, that the photo is sharp, evenly lit and well exposed, and that the background is plain and light. It saves a JPEG between 10 KB and 1 MB, and asks you to confirm that you are not wearing glasses.

Common reasons Indian e-Visa photos are rejected

  • Not square: a 35 x 45 mm or other rectangular photo uploaded as it is.
  • Glasses in the photo.
  • Cropped head: the top of the hair or the chin cut off, or the head off-center.
  • Shadows on the face or on the wall behind.
  • Busy or dark background, or a border around the photo.
  • Wrong file: PNG or PDF instead of JPEG, or larger than 1 MB.
  • Unclear photo: blurred, too dark or a photo of a printed photo.

Printing

The e-Visa only needs the uploaded file; you do not print it. If you are applying for a regular Indian visa on paper instead, follow the photo size in your Indian mission’s checklist.

Frequently asked questions

What size is the Indian e-Visa photo?

The e-Visa site asks for a JPEG whose height and width are equal, between 10 KB and 1 MB. It does not set a pixel size. The tool makes a 600 x 600 pixel photo, a common and sharp square size, and keeps the file well inside the limit.

Can I wear glasses in my Indian visa photo?

No. The e-Visa requirements ask for a full face, front view, eyes open and without spectacles. Take your glasses off for the photo, even if you wear them every day. The tool asks you to confirm this before you download.

What background does the Indian e-Visa photo need?

A plain white or light-colored background, with no shadows on your face or behind you, and no border around the photo. The tool can replace the wall behind you with plain white, and it checks that the result is plain and evenly lit. Start with a light wall and soft light from the front, so the cut-out around your hair looks natural.

How much of the photo should my head fill?

The rules do not give a percentage. They ask you to center your head in the frame and show the full head, from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin. The tool sizes your head at 50 to 69 percent of the photo height, which leaves room above your hair and shows your shoulders.

What else do I upload with the photo?

A scan of your passport's photo page with your name, date of birth, nationality and expiry date, as a PDF between 10 KB and 300 KB. Business and medical e-Visas need one more document, also as a PDF of 10 KB to 300 KB.

Can the e-Visa be rejected because of the photo?

Yes. The e-Visa site says the application may be rejected if the uploaded photograph or documents are unclear or do not meet the specification. Check the photo here first, and check all your details, including the photo, before you submit the application.

Is this photo also for an Indian passport or OCI card?

No. An Indian passport applied for abroad needs a 630 x 810 pixel ICAO photo, which our Indian passport photo maker makes. OCI card photos follow their own rules on the OCI portal and are not covered here. If you apply for a regular paper visa at an Indian mission instead of an e-Visa, use the photo size in that mission's checklist.
