Brazil visa photo requirements
Citizens of the USA, Canada and Australia can apply online for an electronic visitor visa (e-Visa); other nationalities apply for a regular visitor visa at a Brazilian consulate. Brazilian consulates in the USA ask for the same photo in both cases:
- a passport-style color photo, 2 x 2 inches (about 5 x 5 cm);
- taken in the last 6 months, from the front, against a white background, meeting the international (ICAO) standard;
- your face and shoulders fully in the frame, looking straight at the camera;
- no reflections, shadows or dark areas anywhere in the photo;
- a neutral expression, no smiling or frowning, with your eyes open and visible;
- glasses only without reflections, never sunglasses or thick or flashy frames;
- no hat or head wear except for religious reasons, with the face fully visible.
The consulates set no head size. The tool uses the head size of a US passport photo (1 to 1 3/8 inches from chin to crown), which the Miami consulate says usually meets the standard.
e-Visa or consulate visa: what you do with the photo
- e-Visa: you upload the photo in the online application. Download the 600 x 600 pixel JPEG from the tool.
- Regular visitor visa (Miami consulate): you apply in the e-Consular system, print the application receipt, glue your photo onto it, sign it and upload an image of the signed receipt. Print the tool’s sheet and cut out one photo.
How to take a Brazil visa photo at home
- Stand in front of a white wall, about half a meter from it, so there is no shadow behind you.
- Light your face evenly from the front, with no flash reflections.
- Wear a dark or colored top, not white, and take off hats and sunglasses.
- Ask someone to take the photo at your eye level from about 1.5 meters, showing your head and shoulders.
- Look straight at the camera with a neutral face, mouth closed and eyes open.
- Upload the photo above. The tool crops it to 2 x 2 inches, sizes your head, can make the background plain white and checks the photo.
What the tool checks for a Brazil visa
The tool sizes your head from chin to crown at 1 to 1 3/8 inches on the 2 x 2 inch frame and checks that you are centered and straight, that your eyes are open and your mouth is closed, and that the photo is sharp, evenly lit and well exposed. It checks that the background is plain white and can replace the wall behind you with white. It asks you to confirm the glasses and head-covering rules.
Common reasons Brazil visa photos are rejected
- Background that is not white, or shadows behind the head.
- Reflections on glasses or skin; sunglasses or heavy frames.
- Smiling or frowning, or eyes half closed.
- Face or shoulders cut off by the frame.
- Old photos, taken more than six months ago.
- Hats or caps worn for style rather than religion.
- White clothes that blend into the background.
Printing Brazil visa photos
Use Download print sheet with the 4 x 6 in size. It places two 2 x 2 inch photos on one sheet at true size, with cut guides. Order it as a normal 4 x 6 photo print at a pharmacy or photo kiosk, or print it at home on photo paper at 100% scale. See the print sheet maker for tips on keeping the size exact.
Photos of children
Young children need their own photo with as neutral an expression as possible. Only the child’s face and shoulders may be in the frame: no toys and no hands holding the child. Seat a small child on a lap with a white sheet over the adult, or lay a baby on a white sheet and take the photo from above.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a Brazil visa photo?
Brazilian consulates in the USA ask for a passport-style photo of 2 x 2 inches (about 5 x 5 cm) with a white background. The same square photo is uploaded for the electronic visitor visa. The tool makes a 600 x 600 pixel file and a sheet of 2 x 2 inch prints.
Can I use my US passport photo for a Brazil visa?
Usually yes, if it is recent. The Consulate-General of Brazil in Miami says the 2 x 2 inch passport photos taken professionally at US pharmacies usually meet the international standard it asks for. The photo must still be in color, taken in the last six months, on a white background.
Who can apply for the Brazil e-Visa?
The electronic visitor visa is for citizens of the United States, Canada and Australia. It has simpler requirements than a regular visitor visa, mainly your passport and a photo, and a lower fee. Other nationalities apply for a regular visitor visa at their Brazilian consulate.
Can I wear glasses in my Brazil visa photo?
Yes, if the lenses do not reflect the room light or the camera flash. Sunglasses are never allowed, and neither are thick or very flashy frames. If you cannot avoid reflections, take your glasses off for the photo. The tool reminds you of this before you download.
Can I smile in my Brazil visa photo?
No. The Brazilian consulate rules ask for a neutral expression, without smiling or frowning, with your eyes open and visible and your face and shoulders fully in the frame. Look straight at the camera and keep your mouth closed. The tool checks for a smile, an open mouth and closed eyes, and tells you to take the photo again if it finds one.
Can I wear a hat or head covering?
Not a hat or other head wear, except when you wear it for religious reasons, and even then your whole face must be clearly visible. Avoid white clothes too, because they blend into the white background. The tool asks you to confirm the head-covering rule before you download your photo.
Do other Brazilian consulates use the same size?
Not always. The 2 x 2 inch size is what Brazilian consulates in the USA ask for. Brazilian consulates in other countries publish their own visa requirements and may ask for a different size, so check the page of the consulate where you apply before printing.
