The two sizes most people need

Two sizes cover most applications:

  • 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm), square. US passports, US visas on paper, USCIS forms such as the green card, and the Brazil visa. The head is 1 to 1 3/8 in (25–35 mm) from chin to top of head. The 2x2 photo maker makes this size for any US document.
  • 35 x 45 mm (about 1.38 x 1.77 in), portrait. UK, Irish and Australian passports, Schengen visas and Korean visas. The EU Visa Code points to the ICAO Doc 9303 standard for visa photos, and 35 x 45 mm is the size most European missions ask for. The head height rule differs by country, from 29–34 mm (UK) to 32–36 mm (Schengen, Australia).

Canada is the big exception at 50 x 70 mm, and China asks for 33 x 48 mm for visas.

What “passport size photo” means

“Passport size” is not one size. It means the size your document asks for, and each document also sets a head height, a background and an expression. A 2 x 2 in photo cut down to 35 x 45 mm (or the other way round) ends up with the wrong head size, so start from the table above and make the photo for the document you are applying for.

Photo sizes in inches, millimeters and pixels

The pixel sizes below are for printing at 300 pixels per inch, the resolution the print sheets on this site use. Online applications set their own pixel sizes (see the next section).

Photo size Inches Pixels at 300 dpi Used for
2 x 2 in (51 x 51 mm) 2 x 2 in 600 x 600 US documents, Brazil visa
35 x 45 mm about 1.38 x 1.77 in 413 x 531 UK, Ireland, Schengen, Australia, Korea
33 x 48 mm about 1.30 x 1.89 in 390 x 567 China visa
50 x 70 mm about 1.97 x 2.76 in 591 x 827 Canada (passport, PR card, citizenship)

If a rule is written in millimeters, print it in millimeters: the inch values are rounded.

Head height: the measurement that gets photos rejected

A photo can have the right outside size and still be refused because the head is too small or too large inside it. Most documents measure the head from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head (the crown). Korea is different: it states the face size, chin to forehead. The table above gives each rule.

Our tools draw these limits on your photo as you adjust it, so you can see the chin line, the top of the head and the allowed range before you download.

Digital photo sizes

For online applications the rule is in pixels and file size, not millimeters:

  • US visa (DS-160) and DV lottery: a square JPEG. The visa rules allow 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200 pixels; the DV lottery asks for exactly 600 x 600 pixels. Both must be 240 KB or less.
  • UK passport online: at least 600 x 750 pixels and 50 KB to 10 MB. The service crops the photo itself, so it wants your head, shoulders and upper body.
  • Indian passport (from abroad): 630 x 810 pixels, up to 250 KB.
  • Canadian passport online renewal: a file from the photographer, 1200 x 1800 to 3000 x 4500 pixels.

Every document tool on this site writes a file that meets its document’s pixel and file-size rule.

How to get the exact size

  1. Find your document in the table and open its photo maker.
  2. Take or upload a photo against a plain light wall.
  3. The tool crops it to the exact size and head height and checks it against the rules.
  4. Download the digital file, or a print sheet with several copies on 4 x 6 in or 10 x 15 cm paper, printed at 100% scale.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard passport photo size?

There is no single world size. The United States uses 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). The UK, Ireland, the Schengen countries, Australia and South Korea use 35 x 45 mm, and Canada uses 50 x 70 mm. China asks for 33 x 48 mm for visas. Always use the size of the document you are applying for, shown in the table above.

What is the passport photo size in inches?

A US passport photo is 2 x 2 inches, with the head 1 to 1 3/8 inches from chin to top of head. A 35 x 45 mm photo is about 1.38 x 1.77 inches, and a Canadian 50 x 70 mm photo is about 1.97 x 2.76 inches. If your document gives the size in millimeters, print it in millimeters; converted inch sizes are rounded.

Is a 2x2 photo the same as 35 x 45 mm?

No. A 2 x 2 in photo is square, 51 x 51 mm, while 35 x 45 mm is narrower and taller. The head size is also different, so you cannot trim a 2 x 2 in photo down to 35 x 45 mm or the other way round. Make a new photo in the right size instead; the free tool does it from the same picture.

How many pixels is a passport photo?

For printing, at 300 pixels per inch, a 2 x 2 in photo is 600 x 600 pixels and a 35 x 45 mm photo is about 413 x 531 pixels. Online applications set their own sizes, such as 600 x 600 pixels for the DV lottery, at least 600 x 750 pixels for a UK passport and 630 x 810 pixels for an Indian passport.

How is head height measured?

Most documents measure from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head. The US asks for 1 to 1 3/8 in, the UK 29 to 34 mm, the Schengen countries 32 to 36 mm and Canada 31 to 36 mm. A head that is too small or too large is one of the most common reasons photos are rejected.

What does "passport size photo" mean?

It means a photo in the size your passport or visa asks for, not one fixed size. In the US people usually mean 2 x 2 inches; in the UK, Europe and Australia they usually mean 35 x 45 mm. Check the document's own rule, because the head size and background rules change too.

Can I print a passport photo at home at the right size?

Yes, if the document allows home prints. Put the photo on a 4 x 6 in or 10 x 15 cm print sheet at 300 pixels per inch and print it at 100% scale on photo paper. Canada does not accept home photos, and Australia asks for photo lab prints, so check the document page first.
